Garcy Fry / Eco Diva Beauty

We had the opportunity to chat with wife, mother, makeup artist and CEO (in that order) of Eco Diva Beauty an online luxury sustainable beauty boutique! Garcy Fry, along with her beautiful mother, started this business to reconcile the contradictions between their love for the planet and beauty routines.

Frustrated with non-toxic beauty products being in “100 different places,” this mother-daughter team decided to create a place to inspire men and women all over the world, making a difference starting with the products they put on their skin.

Describe your most recent business success and tell us about your next big goal!- We’ve had incredible customer feedback like this from our customer Dana-“ Thank you so much Garcy! I’ve been waiting for your store to launch for a while, you have opened my eyes to the toxins that are in the products I use every day. You have changed my life! Thank you so much!”-Isn’t that what real success looks like? As for our next big goal? We are in the process of opening multiple international warehouses (we already have 2) so that our international customers can get their products quicker without having to pay for it!

Give us the ‘inside scoop’ – what does a day in your business life look like?- Wake up. Read emails. Check Instagram. Check FB. Get out of bed. Make kids breakfast. Get kids dressed. Did I eat breakfast? Go eat breakfast. Get myself ready. Give kids kisses. Long commute to office (I work from home)! Reply to emails again. Package up orders from the previous night (my fave part). New stock arrives in Blaine? Go pick up and bring it back. Tweet. New orders to package up. Blog. Its 2 oclock, did I eat lunch? Go eat lunch. SEO SEO SEO. Eeeeek its 3:25! Dash to post office. Instagram. FB. Ugh-accounting. 5pm-make dinner. Eat with the fam. Play with kids. Storytime. Kisses. Put em to bed. Check emails. Check FB. Check Instagram. Hop into bed and watch Survivor with my hubs. Sleep. Repeat. (can we add WOW!?)

What types of customers are in your business ‘pink book’ and who are you looking to connect with?- Our customers are mostly women and our products are perfect for everyone from the tree-hugging granola goddess to the Chanel and Dior addicts. For women who know the importance of using products that are safe for them and the planet, and for people that aren’t aware of the amount of harmful chemicals in the products they use. We are educating people all over the world through our blog and our relationships about the toxicity of the fast beauty industry.

If you were not doing this job, what is your plan B? – I can honestly say I am doing my dream job. I feel incredibly blessed to be on this journey with my mom. Seeing lives changed and the planet cared for is heaven to me. If this doesn’t work out, I’m going to be a professional race-car driver….(jk)!

Do you think it’s important to love what you do, or make good money?- Hands down LOVE what you do. I’ve seen plenty of people who are old and grey with a bank account that’s full of money but their love and relationship account is empty. That is a sad state of affairs.

Our standards are high…because we know yours are too.

Is owning your own business as glamorous as it sounds?– Yes and no. While it can give you the freedom to do many things, it also ties you down quite a bit. All the financial pressure and growth of the business resting on your shoulders can make it hard to truly “shut off.” And I spend most of my time at a computer desk, is that glamorous?

Where did you get your education? Tell us about this experience.- I went to the University of Bridgeport on a softball scholarship and then came home and went to UBC and studied psychology. I also went to the Blanche MacDonald Center for makeup design. That was it for formal education but since I am a lover of knowledge my education continues through every stage of my life. When I became pregnant with my first child my mother bear instinct kicked in, and protecting my growing baby was my number one goal. So I began to research (and still do) harmful ingredients in products and started committing it memory so that when I was our shopping I knew what to look for.

What celebrity do you look at for style inspiration and why?– My favorite celebrity for style is Gwen Stefani, and for lifestyle-Gwyneth Paltrow, isn’t she everyone’s these days?

What are your favourite stores to shop at for the perfect work wardrobe?- Whats a workout? I have two toddlers, so my workout wardrobe starts the moment I wake up in my pj’s!

Where do you manufacture your products? How did you source the correct manufacturer?- At Eco Diva Beauty, we’ve curated a collection of hard-to-find luxury beauty products that are gorgeously green-inside and out. All of our selections are free from parabens, sulfates, silicones, petrochemical emulsifiers, and synthetic colours and fragrances; and each and every choice we offer is cruelty-free and packaged in reusable or recyclable materials. Our standards are high…because we know yours are too.

Try to help others be successful, and you will be too.

What are your plans for expansion?- I can’t give away all our secrets.

What is your favourite travel hot spot?- Mexico, although its not as safe as it used to be anymore. I love everything about Mexico. The food: avocados, salsa, tacos, and cilantro. The beer and margaritas. The music. And the heat-caliente!

What business book would you recommend for our book club?- Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi

Can you offer any advice for new graduates looking for a job or new entrepreneurs?- Try to help others be successful, and you will be too.
