How To Become A Morning Person As A New Mom

I’ve been working on becoming a morning person… for years. I know what the studies say: the most successful people in business are morning people. “Morning people are more proactive and therefore more successful in their professional lives,” says writer Courtney Rubin.

My husband is a consistent early riser who wakes up at 5:30 a.m. I struggle to get out of bed by 6:30 a.m., but once I’m up (after hitting snooze several times, having my adorable dogs jump all over me, and my husband bribe me with coffee), I’m ready to seize the day! Does not being a morning person make me less successful in my life and career? Studies say YES and if I want to take my business and career to the next level, this is something I should work on.

Duke and Hank. Aren’t they adorable!?

There never seems to be enough hours in the day for those of us that are passionate entrepreneurs. The best way to gain these extra hours is to (you guessed it) get up earlier. But, getting out of bed and immediately moving to your coach with blanket and pillow in hand doesn’t cut it. We need to amplify our morning energy and give ourselves a reason to get out of bed. This is the only way to change our behaviour.

In his article for Elite Daily, Paul Hudson explains that “waking up early may not give you much more energy than waking up later, but what it will do is give you more time in the day when you feel energetic and motivated.”

Adopt a morning ritual and you will start to see BIG results with your level of success, explains Health and Lifestyle Consultant, Jennifer Cohen. “Waking up early offers you opportunities that few get to enjoy – watch the sun rise, hear the sound of birds chirping, and just be still. We are always on the move. Sit and enjoy the morning calm. It’s a brief time where you can be alone with your thoughts. Just breathe.”

Here is what I’m doing to enjoy my mornings:

  1. Getting in some “me” time. I’m taking 15 minutes to play with my dogs and watch the morning news. I’m doing this before I make breakfast, shower, or anything else I need to do to get ready for the busy day ahead.
  2. Spend quality time with my family and get some exercise. The other day, I woke up even earlier (6 a.m.!), put our coffees in to-go mugs and we went for an hour long walk around the boardwalk with our dogs. It was invigorating to start the morning this way. Breathing in some fresh air and great conversation.
  3. Invest in my passion. I’m lucky enough to love what I do. But, I sometimes struggle with having too many ideas, which pull me in too many directions. I’m really working on how to connect all of these ideas so that they create one common theme and purpose. This allows me to feel that I’m moving ahead, but in one focused direction. I’m spending 30 minutes of my morning, investing in my personal goals, working on my plan to take on the world and, ultimately, giving myself more focus throughout my work day.

“Failing to plan is planning to fail.”
